A Process

TagCommons is a collaborative, volunteer effort to get some agreements on the table quickly, to identify some needs and iterate on proposals, and ground the whole thing in applications.

The process is rather simple:

  1. identify use cases and requirements for sharing tag data
  2. identify means for meeting these requirements, such as ontologies, formats, clearinghouses, etc.
  3. study existing proposals and implementations of 1 & 2
  4. decide what needs to be done (adopt, extend, clarify, minimize, etc.)
  5. divide into groups to simultaneously
    • specify an ontology (or a family with a core, whatever is most useful)
    • specify mappings to standard formats and other ontologies
    • build applications that use the ontologies and formats
  6. publicize, release to commons, and move on!
